Artist spotlight: Amanda Struver

Each day Amanda sits facing her studio window, legs crossed, listening intently to her big black headphones as she researches and gathers her materials.  Her studio has two shovels, a pink sparkly pig mask, sardine tins painted white, a tripod and other objects that don’t seem connected. It is her effervescence that fills the room.  Amanda Struver considers any given space she occupies as a part of her practice. She continually thinks of ways to contextualize ideas and objects within the given situation, as she uses boundaries of place and the body, concepts of disarray and dysfunction, as tools for her work.

Amanda understands her practice as manic. She is continually working through multiple projects at once. However, each idea is linked by questions of various dualities, such as; personal vs universal; animal vs. human; nothing vs everything; dirty vs sterile.  These questions began with the exploration of her body and the ways in which one is to behave or not behave, based on the cultural/social beliefs and norms.

She does not prefer being identified in one form or to belong to any one category, but rather she frees herself by revealing different performances of alternative selves. Examples of these performances are Pool Boi– where she had the chance to care for a pool, she performed and logged entries on Instagram of her life poolside, and Scum– another performance in which she walked around the crowds of the gallery either noticed or neglected by them and created an atmosphere that tested their tolerance through smell and behaviour.

Order vs chaos is another duality she heavily worked through. Over the course of seven months she built up a space composed of three walls in her given studio, called a “set”, and filled it with various objects, creating different scenarios.  It evolved to her entering the space and recording her actions, which ranged from sitting on a block of lard, crushing eggs between her armpits, and pouring milk on the carpet only to absorb it back onto a rag until full and repeat. Through the repetition of a simple task or motion she lost sense of time and was transported out of the situation of the “set”.  By bringing focus to repetition, she provokes comfortability in regularity.

“It is easy to exist within a routine, and I wonder how does this influence an experience of a reality?”

While at Pilotenkueche, Amanda will be continuing to process through a few different projects, and one that is specific to the context of this residency- in which she will be digging a hole under a bridge for Sad Baby. The hole will be dug for a set number of hours, each day. In conjunction, she will be doing a series of writings for the situation of Sad Baby, who is all of us and none of us. Through this work she will suggest a notion of routine, while emulating desperation felt from doing it all for nothing.

Artist spotlight: AL Kleiner

 

“Too much decoration distracts my thought process” confirms Adam, from the seat of his nearly empty Pilotenkueche studio.  Adam’s creative process begins with research in the form of reading. For this, he needs a blank environment. This provides him the clarity of a clean mental space in which he can grow new knowledge.

It was upon discovering the Contemporary Master Heads of the 1970’s that Adam decided to face his practice with a new attitude. After experimentation at The National Art School in Sydney, he decided to hand the paint brush over to the spectator at his graduate exhibition. Now his creations could be activated by interaction from the viewer. Adam created Micro Studios: sophisticated constructions of wall hangings, encasing canvas and painting materials. The expertise Adam gathered over years of landscape paintings translated into strict attention to detail and composition within the creation of his tangible objects.

A socially engaged practice satisfies Adam in knowing that he is critiquing the “look but don’t touch” ethos of the gallery space. He is hoping to push this further during his three month stay at Pilotenkueche. After a six month break from creating his own art works, he is entering the residency with no fixed program. With an interest in German politics, Adam hopes that his practice will be somewhat shaped by the dynamics of his new location and the social situations and structures in which he finds himself. I’m curious to experience how these discoveries are translated into a multi-sensory installation.

Unfinished Hase

Adam Kleiner has been inquiring about the current political and environmental climate of Germany due to the rapid rise of their populist party, the AfD and their desire to strip Germany’s renewable energy plan outlined in their manifesto. The work “Nimm eine pflantze – du wirst sie brauchen” (take a plant – you’ll need it”) focuses on distributing plants in exchange for a donation to extinction rebellion, an international social movement aims to reduce the current impact of climate change via non-violent protest and civil disobedience. Each plant in the work was selected for their noted air purifying qualities which further engages with the history of Leipzig being an industrial city as well as Saxony being the highest supporters of the AfD.

Re-View: I Accept the Cookies

I came. I saw. I ate

Thursday 1 November 2018, I Accept the Cookies, the first exhibition of the 37th round of Pilotenkueche opened its doors.  It had taken days to prepare the exhibition space: from painting the wall, to arranging the work, and then finally placing the cookies (as promised in advance) in a highly visible place.

Thanks to the almost sterile environment of Ping Pong, upon arrival people could see how concisely everything was arranged. Using only one stone grey wall for the works of 13 different artists without creating an overwhelming impression certainly isn’t an easy act, especially when the artists had barely known each other only a couple of weeks.

There is an old German proverb that goes, “Too many cooks spoil the broth.” In our case it’s cookie dough.. But in the end with the remarkable knowledge and skill of the curator, Vivian Tabach, this cookie could’ve not been tastier.

Although most of the exhibited art was still in progress, as a whole it created a unique finished piece. In a simple, yet experimental way, with each artist participating with their own, personal flare, the installation mirrored the character of Lindenau in which the exhibition took place. Like the neighborhood and exhibition, Pilotenkueche is about people coming together. What matters isn’t the gender, the heritage, the religion etc. – but the common interest for art…and for cookies.

Diversity was also present in the audience, ranging from the artists themselves, former pilots and people from the local art scene to seniors who had read about the vernissage in the local newspaper LVZ – even more interesting since this broadsheet isn’t the exactly known for its affinity for contemporary art.

There was even one guy who just felt so attracted by our well placed bait – the plate of cookies shining at him from behind the glass pane – that he just had to accept them without looking further to see what was going on inside besides them. This was especially relevant as, in some way, it turned the virtual phenomena of just hitting “accept” without even reading the endless terms and conditions into a real thing. Eventually, sedated and with another cookie in his hands he also found interest in the art pieces. He could be found studying very closely the synergy of sketches and paintings, of the installations and leftovers attached to the stone grey wall giving just a hint what might be in the making behind the door of Pilotenkueche studio. He left with flyer in hand.

This was a really nice evening, with happy pilots and many interesting talks, leaving the audience hungry for the next crumbs in the artist’s little journey through the different art spaces of Leipzig. 

After this kick-off and with an even more strengthened bond, our pilots are already preparing their next exhibition: Rutschbahn. Come slide with us into it and see how they progress!

Visiting: Galerie Hotel Leipziger Hof, Helmut

This Thursday saw several pilots accompany our curator Vanessa Souli to visit two gallery spaces in the East of the city. First, they browsed a collection of works from over 90 local artists on permanent exhibition at the Hotel Leipziger Hof on Hedwigstraße.  The majority of the works reflected Leipzig’s vibrant history as a centre for printmaking and etching, ranging from the early 20th Century into the present day.

Next they headed towards Reudnitz for a solo exhibition featuring works from Jos Diegel, a Leipzig-based artist originally from Frankfurt.  The venue, Helmut, is a non-profit organisation and are dependent on various donations and support from committed members and the public. Also located in the East of Leipzig, it is a space for art, culture and political education and the works of Job Diegel touch on these themes; questioning the social-political structures within our societies.

Galerie Hotel Leipziger Hof on Facebook

Visiting: GFZK, Kunstkraftwerk, Grassi Museum für Völkerkunde, Alte Handelsschule

Tüe last two days saw pilots pay visits to several galleries and museums accross Leipzig, in order to get a better  idea of the cultural landscape of the city.  On Wednesday, they took advantage of free admittance to the Galerie für Zeitgenossiche Kunst (GFZK) offered on the last Wednesday of every month, perusing the ongoing exhibition Pass-Stücke, a collection aimed at appealing to the wider public by including an array of everyday objects.  The collection notably featured a chronological catalogue of Texte zur Kunst, a German-language magazine focused on critiquing art and contemporary culture.  

Thursday saw the pilots accompany our curator Vanessa Souli to events at three separate locations: ‘Renaissance Experience,’ at the Kunstkraftwerk, the permanent collection at the Grassi Museum für Völkerkunde, and finally the opening for ‘Italian Urban Art,’ at the Alte Handelsschule. ‘Renaissance Experience,’ is a series of audio-visual installations, joint funded by Leipzig and Florence city councils, aimed at replicating the contents of the Uffizi Gallery within the walls of the Kunstkraftwerk in an immersive, multi-dimentional experience.  Next, the pilots headed north to tour the permanent collections at the Grassi museum of ethnology: a series of objects arranged in a timeline from Western, Middle-Eastern and Asian cultures.  Finally, the pilots headed to the Alte Handelsschule for the opening of ‘Italian Urban Art,’ a show organised by former Pilotenkueche curator of the 34th Round Maria Aria.

Collaborations: Rot Rot Rot at Intershop Interdisciplinaire and Josef Filipp Gallery

Last Saturday, the exhibition ,,Rot Rot Rot” was opened in Gallery intershop interdisciplinaire The exhibition had a strongly trans-disciplinary atmosphere, featuring the works of over 35 local and international artists with backgrounds in textiles, painting and performance.  Representing Pilotenkueche were a selection of works from our  Program Coordinator Magdalena Cichon, as well as a gripping performance from one of our current Local Participants Beate Körner.  The performance, ‘Dark Impulses,’ featured  Icelandic Metal musician Gyða Hrund Þorvaldsdóttir, creating a dialogue between Metal and Japanese Butoh dance.  Beate’s convulsive, sporadic movements were implied to have been ‘controlled’ by drone-like sounds produced by the hooded Þorvaldsdóttir, who occupied the far corner of the room.  Well done to them both for a deeply involving performance!

This Friday sees us returning to Josef Filipp Gallery, where yet another Pilotenkueche-affiliated artist will be collaborating! Former resident of the 35th round, John Berry will be exhibiting several colourful paintings alongside works from two other international artists at the Josef Filipp.  John’s colourful paintings play with a  controlled set of patterns, strictly arranged like the elements of a rug, but still with a sense of intelligence and humor. Taped edges are set next to spray painted areas, seemingly spacious shapes flip back and forth, accidental marks and blurry colors coexist with geometric structures. The motif is never recognizable enough to become the actual protagonist of the painting; the overall construction of the image is meant to be the protagonist.

Visiting: The Grass is Greener, Josef Filipp Gallery

Last week we visited two spaces at the Spinnerei: The Grass is Greener and the Josef Filipp Gallery At The Grass is Greener, we were shown ,,Schwimmer und Türmer,” an exhibition by Aachen-based artist Sigrid von Lintig.  A painter, Sigfrid von Lintig’s has been focused on swimmers for around five years.  The collection combined this recent focus on swimmers with  older projects of hers focused on towers, creating a dialogue between these themes.

Afterwards at the Josef Filipp Gallerie we were shown three photographers’ exhibitions in the wake of f/Stop photography festivalFantastic Realism by Sebastian Gögel, Bauhaus Dessau by Georg Brückmann, and Wende Zeiten by Thomas Steinert. Each artists’ work covered a specific location and theme throughout German history, as well as aspects of the local history of Leipzig.  Former Pilotenkueche curator Philipp Anders, currently co-curator of the Josef Filipp, took us around each artist’s collection, explaining the context and process behind them.

This was the 31st Round

Last week we said goodbye to our most recent residents. We’d like to commend this round of artists for making our first term in the new studios an exceptional learning experience; We will not forget your openness and your efforts! In addition we would like to thank our  friends, attendees and our supporters during these months of transition, as well as the broader Leutzsch community for participating in our Tour de Franz open studio event. We hope to foster a continued exchange between our international residents and the local artists.

Re-view: ‘FULL STOP’ / 20 – 27.05.17

Here are some impressions of the final show of the recent residents from Brazil, Belgium, Greece, Canada, Sweden, Northern Ireland, USA, UK, Russia, Malaysia, China, and South Korea after they worked three months in PILOTENKUECHE.

This group was particularly special to us as the first group of artists that has vitalized the new site of Pilotenkueche. Their work offered a very special focus on painting, research based work, installation and photography, presenting a diversity of expression around the topics of identity, data aggregation, & nature with a myriad of technical & activistic approaches. During the opening were three performances, live music, and a chance to discuss the final work with our international residents. In addition we were pleased to include three guest artists from Leipzig: Hannes Uhlenhaut, Marie Lynn Ravens, and hansen_windisch. With an ethos of inclusion, we presented a range of narratives to explore the dialogue of the broader context in contemporary art. The show  took place at the new space of PILOTENKUECHE, where all were welcome to attend the celebration of the tenth anniversary of the project. Here are some impressions of the exhibition:
