Lina Buck: Constantly Moving Image

Life is a continuous state of flux, and people are perpetually in the process of evolving. This notion permeates Lina Buck’s art. Moments and concepts fold into each other, creating an ever-changing landscape. “People are constantly in a state of becoming something/someone but do they really ever become?”

Exploration and experimentation

Lina’s artistic journey has been a dynamic one, marked by exploring various art forms before finding her true calling. She transitioned from painting to sculpture and ultimately found herself using an array of mediums including performance, installation, photography and video projection. The versatility of space in these mediums allowed her to express the multifaceted nature of her ideas about society, the physical environment, and the human experience.

Drawing inspiration from the works that use performance within a video framework such as Bruce Nauman and Angelica Mesiti, she explores the themes of body and space. How is the body used in relation to perspective? What happens when the body or perspective dissolves? How can these elements be used as mediums? By diving deep into experimentation, Lina finds a way to combine minimalist aesthetics with meaningful narratives. “Often, my narratives and concepts are not simple in a sense, but easier to grasp. “

Lina connects body and environment

In one of her latest solo exhibitions, The Sun’s Kiss Begins to Sting, Lina delves into the social and environmental consequences of rapid urban development. The significance of connectivity between human nature and its approach to dealing with the outside environment is embedded deep within the artist’s world. The work explores its evolution and how shifts and light influences our approach, engagement, and experience of social and physical environments.

Inspired by the COVID lockdowns that affected everyone’s sense of belonging, Each Other explores the significance of human connections during times of isolation.  The emotions Lina builds in her performances are gentle yet impactful, often leaving room for interpretation, allowing viewers to experience and understand the work in their own unique ways.

I am speaking, the language I am speaking

Lina  investigates the continuous state of flux and becoming that defines human existence. She explores the interconnectedness of moments and experiences. Everything folds into the next, creating an ongoing process of transformation. Her current project is, I am speaking, the language I am speaking. Throughout this soundwork, she overlaps languages as they are spoken and re-spoken, emphasizing the ever-evolving nature of communication and expression.

Striving to strengthen community relationships by celebrating our multicultural society(s) through producing an artwork that showcases it’s overlapping and ever-expanding nature through language. Language is evolving, Adapting and unfolding, carried by the movement of wind and on exhaling breaths. Its origins are never lost, but morphing and changing through shifting migration, site and context. The new work in development aims to celebrate language(s) adaptability and the ability to form a deeper connection to our social and physical environments.”

In the grand tapestry of existence, myriad threads intertwine, forming a dance of connections. With each new creation, Lina Buck adds to it, inviting us all to explore our own paths of becoming.
