In the realm of art, there exists an endless expanse of ideas and new opportunities. We currently find ourselves at yet another precipice. While many are running scared, claiming Artificial Intelligence (AI) is or will be the death of art and painting, Melbourne-based artist Felix Von Dallwitz. is harnessing its potential. Nurturing both his love for maths and art, Felix seeks to answer the question, “How can traditional and analog paintings find their place in this post-digital world?”
In a society where the internet has become a constant presence, images are consumed at an astonishing rate. Within the realm of AI, algorithms, and pixels, can merge to form new, abstract dimensions of artistic expression. Nevertheless, rather than viewing this as a threat to the authenticity of traditional art, Felix chose to embrace it. In 2019, he took his first steps to learn how to harness the potential of AI in art.
Unleashing creativity with AI
Initially, Felix experimented with training algorithms on vast datasets to create new images. By feeding the AI different sets of paintings, he observed the algorithms had learned from the data and reconstructed entirely new artworks and new visual content. In discovering this, Felix began to fuse the two worlds of AI and traditional painting together. These AI-generated images served as references, sparking fresh ideas. The allure of AI lies in its speed and instant generation of images. A process that would otherwise be time-consuming and laborious through traditional painting methods. Accepting this transformation, Felix states that, “art is a spectrum”, encompassing endless possibilities.
However, despite its transformative impact, Felix recognizes that AI will continue to play a significant role in art: becoming part of the conceptual process for artists everywhere. Acknowledging that like any revolutionary advancement, AI may lose its novelty with time, becoming just an extra, handy tool in art, Felix believes it will become an invaluable asset to complement human creativity.
Discovering a New Artistic Odyssey
Prior to embarking on the PILOTENKUECHE residency, Felix showcased his art in a major exhibition in Melbourne. Eager to explore new challenges and maintain his creative drive, Felix is seeking to immerse himself in unfamiliar environments and discover new, fresh concepts. Looking ahead he has ambitious plans for more residencies, with hopes of discovering new artistic landscapes in places like Bali, Berlin, and London. Fulfilling his primary goal of work and travel, residencies serve as this perfect blend for him. He considers them a gateway to expanding his artistic horizons.
Felix has honed his skills within this current style. His artistic journey showcases the power of welcoming innovation and AI art. Now, with a desire to search for new challenges and keep the spark of creativity alive, he seeks to venture beyond his comfort zone and continue to push the boundaries of his creativity. Like AI, Felix embraces change, and he aims to keep the artistic process consistently intriguing and ever-evolving.
