Artist Spotlight : Maria Kubysh

Maria Kubysh starts the conversation with color. The dialogue continues through the vibrant act of painting. She claims that “colour itself communicates a lot” and agrees with Baudelaire that colour is the “soul’s native tongue”.

Maria wants to present work infused with lightness and simplicity through her graphics. Describing herself as a “very visual person”, this Canadian-based artist constructs a minimal, bold and energetic language.

Maria’s current work is developing organically.

She compares her creative process to “growing a garden” She says, “You don’t fully control it, even if you try to prune it or contain it.” Her shapes and forms are cultivated rather than symbolic.

Maria continues to explore the primal structures of communication despite classical training.

Moving to Canada from Russia at the tender age of 16, she studied Graphic Design at Ontario College of Art and Design. She sees painting as the best medium to unleash her lively shapes and forms which verge on a form of communication.

Maria names the empty or “negative space” around the shapes she produces the “conceptual room”. This creates a light and breathable area which is open to the viewers’ interpretation. The artist refers to Cy Twombly, Matisse, Basquiat and Laura Owens as her main inspirations.
