Fleshy Gesture Texture: body disruption

Can you recall the sensation of a momentous change, that fleeting instance before it crystallizes into memory? Before it becomes a shareable souvenir, a certainty that grounds you, or a piece of knowledge that integrates into your broader understanding—a new reality, or in the worst case, a trauma?

moments in body

This moment is intensely physical, deeply embodied. It may be one of the most visceral experiences outside of sexuality. Internally, your body may rumble, adrenaline coursing through you; externally, your skin might react with goosebumps or even bruises. The body moves fluidly or in sharp, angular motions. It finds gestures.

The French philosopher Jacques Derrida explored a concept he termed ‘Ereignis,’ which captivated him due to its resistance to verbal or cognitive articulation. This concept acts as a disruptive force in our perception. It even disrupts the language we use to express our feelings and experiences, representation is out of order in these moments. Transferred to the art field it correlates with the debate since the DADA movement, how can Art touch Life?

For artists, this state is a familiar one. While others might shy away, artists actively seek out the disruption. For to find the moment when something becomes tangible— it can cause pain, shatter, or stagger—while simultaneously being elusive, as though it might have always been present. It marks the emergence of something different within our practice, still connected to our previous work but woven with new threads, creating a new texture.

This is what we seek when we embark on a residency: immersing ourselves in a new environment, allowing it to disrupt our thoughts and systems, and letting the “Ereignis” break into our daily lives. However, this is not a one-way journey.

body in confusion

As Derrida also emphasizes, the new text (in his case- he is the one who said everything is text) can in turn become an event itself, unleashing a performative power that transforms us, even those who have been here before. The event ‘realizes’ the novel, the unheard-of otherness within us, which becomes visible only through these disturbances. We are curious to see whether it will also disturb you.
