Curator Spotlight: Jazmin Soria

Jazmin Soria likes a challenge. Despite it being not the easiest field to get into, Curation always felt like the right direction for her. That determination and sense of purpose motivated her to leave her native Hawaii in order to explore the art world in a place far away from home – Europe.

Her high level of education is immediately recognizable. When talking to Jazmin, it shines through in the way she naturally phrases a sentence. When watching her work, it shows in the way she keeps a detail-oriented and focused disposition. And it comes as no surprise when reviewing her accomplishments. Jazmin moved to Europe in 2013 and has acquired her Bachelor’s degree at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland. She then moved to the Netherlands, where she is in the process of getting her master’s degree in Museums and Collections at Leiden University.

Creating a harmonious and fluid space is of the utmost importance to Jazmin.

When asked about her ambitions and visions for the upcoming exhibitions at PILOTENKUECHE, she puts an emphasis on creating an atmosphere and space that feels like a whole, while representing each artist individually. This mindset developed after writing her thesis on the Museological Representation of Hawaiian History and Culture in the Bishop Museum, Honolulu.

Her views on the role of a curator are refreshing.

She is aware of the politics that a museum or a collection may have or represent, in terms of what you are exhibiting, and how you do so. She aspires to step out of the traditional, authoritarian position of a curator who dictates the space and prefers to work in a way that goes hand and hand with the artists and their concept and practice, creating a mutual and unique vision for each exhibition.

We are excited to feature Jazmin Soria in her first solo curatorial work here at PILOTENKUECHE. Her experience has prepared her for this opportunity to show her well honed skills. Other than her many academic achievements, she is also passionate about volunteer work. She spent two and a half years at Peacock Visual Arts gallery in Aberdeen, Scotland. While there, she was working hand in hand with the curator, artist and visitors. She has also volunteered at the Honolulu Museum of art.

See her curation work in the upcoming exhibitions.
