José Vivenes: The Vitality of Painting

Reflection on the essence of pictorial representation reveals itself to be inexhaustible. In every corner, landscape, temporal or geographical context, a constant renewal, or more precisely, an overflowing of it, emerges. As a result, the history of painting seems to be continually reinitiating itself, raising fundamental questions that we as humanity have always asked ourselves throughout time, questions that sometimes haunt us, and sometimes comfort us.

For the Venezuelan artist José Vivenes, painting is his medium of visual expression par excellence, although he does not cease to explore and experiment in other media such as installation and sculpture. Painting, with its privileged space in the vast History of Art, possesses the capacity to think, following the line of thought of the French philosopher George Didi-Huberman, although the way in which this happens is an enigma.

Dialogue through paint

This reflection, it can be considered that painting, beyond being a mere visual reflection, becomes a continuous dialogue between the artist and his environment, between tradition and innovation. Each brushstroke and each work constitutes a reading of reality, a reinterpretation which, paradoxically, reaffirms the constant human need to explore and understand its own existence. Thus, painting stands as a medium through which the artist not only visually represents the world, but also actively participates in the construction and reconstruction of meanings. In this sense, Vivenes’ artistic practice is an ongoing quest to understand the essence of painting as a language in its critical/political potency.

In the pictorial domain, Vivenes frames his own artistic practice in the parergon of painting, considering it as a historical event. From this perspective, his interest focuses on painting as a witness, a bearer of traces, memory and indications. Employing the expressive richness of colour, tone and pigment, his body of work is distinguished by the expressiveness not only of the portrait, but also of the human figure as a whole. Vivenes frequently resorts to epic scenes and establishes a dialogue with celebrated works of art history, exploring their traditions and genealogies. Here, the inexhaustible character of painting is emphasised, understanding the pictorial as a tool for highlighting and questioning the historical fact. This perspective is based on the idea that history is a process in constant construction, something that always has the capacity to begin again.

Vivenes reconsiders what defines us

In the gestural essence of his strokes, Vivenes opens up the possibility of reconsidering the bonds and affections that define us as human beings. Simultaneously, his artistic practice becomes self-reflexive as he contemplates the conditions and possibilities inherent in painting through the pictorial medium itself as a form of knowledge that not only documents history, but also actively participates in its continuous reinterpretation and reconstruction.

Vivenes’ work stands as a testimony not only to external reality, but also to painting’s capacity to explore the complexity of the human condition and the dynamic nature of history. By exemplo, in the context of the geography known as Latin America, the artist seeks to highlight the diverse conditions of cultural syncretism. His focus is not on the tension between coloniser and colonised, but rather on considering this space as a field of cultural richness. This phenomenon is not unique, as it has existed at other times and in other places. The artist, with an ironic and arcane reflective gaze, is interested in highlighting these contrasts from another perspective, underlining the complexity and cultural diversity that characterise our geographies.
