Alejandro Loera started his art career after a transformative volunteer experience with Central American migrants in Saltillo. This experience was emotionally intense and led him to seek artistic expression as a form of catharsis. He began painting directly with oils and spatulas, creating textured works without preliminary sketches. Alejandro focuses on using color and texture to express emotions and create new universes. Through his paintings, he creates a surreal language while still maintaining a connection to social realism. Rather than solely wandering through the world of dreams and imagination as pure surrealism would, his distinctive narrative language is rich with social commentary. 

Alejandro’s philosophy through images

Alejandro’s interest in the philosophical approach to painting stems from his bachelor’s in philosophy from the University of Guadalajara where he continues to teach. Frequently incorporating philosophical and literary references in his art, he identifies himself as Dionysus, inspired by Nietzsche‘s concept of art as a bridge between Apollo and Dionysus. He embodies the illusion of emotions through what he calls the “Dionysian Technique”. Passion, madness, and emotion align with his expressive style of painting. He is particularly inspired by Nietzsche’s use of metaphors and imagery in his writing, which Alejandro finds visually stimulating and emotionally evocative.

Besides his inspirations from philosophy, Alejandro mentions being influenced by Edvard Munch and Vincent van Gogh. He was particularly moved by Munch’s The Scream. He first saw it at the age of 12 and felt a profound connection to both the image and its accompanying text. His work is a fusion of his personal experiences, philosophical influences, and passionate responses to the world around him.

Alejandro is also influenced by his environment, such as the country he lives in. In Mexico, art develops through political relations. He believes that art can be a powerful tool for rethinking society. It can help build perspectives that make people reconsider their personal and political realities, and act as a facilitator for social mobilization.

Dionysus’s plans for PK

During his residency at PILOTENKUECHE, Alejandro wants to continue his narrative in other possible worlds, focus on the idea of the eternal return and the theme of the origin of time and the universe, which he realized during his postgraduate studies. He aims to create different series on themes such as oscillating universe from Nietzsche’s philosophy. While he paints a representation of the Big Bang, he considers the current time and the possibility of approaching painting differently.
