Visiting: Shaima Sobhy // 06.04.18

On Thursday, PILOTENKUECHE visited the studio of Shaima Sobhy, whose paintings are influenced by her Egyptian heritage. Shaima was born in Dubai, worked at German University Cairo and is currently writing her Ph.D.-thesis at Bauhaus University Weimar.

The mostly female figures she displays are often provocatively naked, their bodies twisted in surrealistic deformations, often sexualized, partly veiled, oscillating between two extremes of visibility and complete disguise. Especially in older works, she also includes references to traditional ancient Egyptian artwork. She talked about her motifs as well as her experiences with exhibiting her art in Cairo and Leipzig.
Thank you Shaima for having us!

This was the 34th Round

Last week we said goodbye to our most recent residents. We will remember the ideas and collaborative spontaneity inspired by the first round of 2018 to work at our studio! We would also like to thank our interns, local participants, guests and friends, attendees and our supporters, as well as the broader Leipzig community for participating in our events. We hope to foster a continued exchange between our international participants and the local artists.

Here is a selection of impressions from the 34th round, including museum tours, gallery visits, artist talks, and our preview and final events:

Re-View: Consultations // 15.03.18

The consultation between a curator and an artist is a crucial moment for the exhibition. The direct contact between the participants guides the overall direction of the curation, and encourages creativity, a process that transforms the initial and individual ideas. In this pairing, we develop a different concept about an exhibition, one that is greater than the ideas of one mind. The consultation period also allows the artist to reevaluate their work and to compare their ideas with an outsider, which ultimately helps define their position in the exhibition. It is likewise essential for the curator to understand the individual pieces that are a part of the exhibition as a whole. We are looking forward to a night of performances and collaboration, and would again like to invite you to Flugbahn, the final exhibition of the 34th round at our studios!

Opening: 24.03.18, 18:00h

Open: 26.03 – 28.03.18 (Mo, Tue, Wed, 12 – 15h)
