“What Did You Expect?”// Exhibition in Progress

This week, we focused on preparing our preview exhibition. The final show of our most recent residents from the UK, Canada, Israel, Korea, China, Slovakia, the US, Spain, Belgium, and the Netherlands, will present the work of nearly three months spent at the residency.

Through photography, found objects, painting, sculpture, and digital media, aesthetic and social boundaries are blurred. The 33rd round of artists is especially interested in the play of art, its capacity to contain, convey, or spur an experience. We are also pleased to incorporate the work of our local participants, Martin Schuster and Sébastien Kauffmann, as well as our guest artists, Willy Le Nalbaut and Ando Saori.

All are welcome to attend our opening event this Saturday, December 16th.

Final Exhibition // ‘What Did You Expect?’ of the 33rd round / 16.12 – 22.12.17

The final show of our most recent residents from the UK, Canada, Israel, Korea, China, Slovakia, the US, Spain, Belgium, and the Netherlands, will present the work of nearly three months spent at the residency.

You approach one of the disintegrated dwellings on Franz-Flemming. You do this because you have heard there will be a night of performances; perhaps you have even visited before. You are led by candle light up two flights of stairs, and peer through a partially shattered opening. You glimpse a volleyball court, a pi(nk)nic, a cluster of reeking balloons, a fools fire, a suspect living room. What did you expect?

Through photography, found objects, painting, sculpture, and digital media, aesthetic and social boundaries are blurred. The 33rd round of artists is especially interested in the play of art, its capacity to contain, convey, or spur an experience. We are also pleased to incorporate the work of our local participants, Martin Schuster and Sébastien Kauffmann, as well as our guest artists, Willy Le Nalbaut and Ando Saori.

Visiting: West Side / Andrea Garcia and Martin Schuster // 30.11.17

Last week we visited two studios in the West side of Leipzig. We began with the former pilot Andrea Garcia Vasquez (Mixed Media; USA). She uses textiles as a mimetic device, and as a basis for psycho-geographic experiments. We spoke of her process, her recent visit and exhibition in Beirut, the ways she adapts her work to an immediate context, of art as a way to aggregate and relay data, and of other artists that inspire her work.

We continued to the painting atelier of Martin Schuster, one of our Guest Artists this round, at FF15. We had the chance to look at Martin’s portfolio, ranging from parodic Bruegel inspired landscapes that incorporate the characters of more than 80 video games, to a series of cloud paintings and vivid landscapes, to his most recent experiment involving the male figure in contemporary portraiture.

Thank you Andrea and Martin for your time!

Re-View: Consultations // 10-17.11

Consultations, curation talks and follow-ups are an important part of our program. In the last weeks we have discussed the ongoing processes with individual residents of the 33rd round as well as with our guest artists and local participants, commencing the process of curating the final in-house exhibition, “What Did You Expect” held on December 16th. All are welcome to attend!

OPEN CALL FOR LOCAL PARTICIPANTS April – June 2018

“PILOTENKUECHE” is looking for artists from around Leipzig to participate in the “Local Participants Program” for a period of three months. This program aims to support the local art scene and to connect it to international artists.

Each accepted artist is offered a full stipend, provided by “PILOTENKUECHE” and financed by a private donor. We maintain engagements with several partners, and by introducing our artists to these, make it possible for participants to cooperate with and exhibit in other venues. Our concept encourages experimental strategies and embraces a trans-disciplinary ethos, aiming to provide our participants with the experience of accomplishing something collectively. In a group of around eleven international artists working in the space and two local participants participating on our program activities, a stimulating dialogue becomes vital in fostering an independent position in one’s work while binding the individuals temporarily within the group, which leads to a long-term network that exists even after the program is over.

We’re looking for local artists to participate on our program in the 35th round during from April – June 2018 until 30.11.17.

Term: April – June 2018
Application Deadline: 30.11.17

ALL DEADLINES
Round April – June 2018: 30.11.17
Round July – Sept.: 2018: 30.12.17
Round Oct. – Dec. 2018: 31.03.18
Round Jan. – March 2019: 30.06.18

WHAT WE PROVIDE
During the 3 months, Local Participants are free to join our weekly program, request a consultation, and join the project exhibitions. Since Local participants have their own studios, we do not provide a working place at “PILOTENKUECHE”. With this framework in mind, we intend to elicit an engaged response in a stimulating environment between locals and international participants:

  • approximately 2 Local Participants participate in the program together with
  • approximately 11 International Residents
  • studio space is not provided to Local Participants
  • costs / participation fee: 0,00 EUR* / month, per artist
  • the fee covers the participation costs
  • studio costs, art materials & living accommodation are additional

*The fee includes the full stipend of 300,00 EUR from ‘PILOTENKUECHE,’ with directly subsidizes the full program fee of 300,00 EUR. A further support is not provided.

Living accomodation is additional. The project offers one shared apartment which hosts two artists. The Program activities consists of studio visits, museum tours, scheduled art critiques, an art talk by our residents, as well as one preview show and one final group exhibition.

EXPECTATIONS
Participating artists are expected to participate with the program objectives, to contribute to a collective enterprise, and be open to work with others. In exchange for the partial stipend, artists are expected to leave a donation of one or two art works.

Re-View: Open Studio // 03-04.11.17

During last weekends Open Studio event, we were pleased to introduce the current round of pilots to an inquisitive public. Mid-way through the residency program, the 33rd round hasn’t stopped surprising us with their curious and playful approaches.

Impressions

Our artists also explained their processes and cogitations during the first series of “Work in Dialogue” talks.  We had the chance to discuss the interrelation of themes and disciplines with the audience. Thank you to all who attended this series and expressed interest in our endeavors. We hope to see and meet you during our final exhibition, “WHAT DID YOU EXPECT?”

Open Studio // international group exhibit / 03-04.11.17

The upcoming show of our most recent residents from the UK, Canada, Israel, Korea, China, Slovakia, the US, Spain, Belgium, and the Netherlands will present ongoing work after a month spent at the residency. This round of artists has a particular interest in painting, installation, print media, found objects and performance.

The “Open Studio” event is a preview for the final presentation, taking place on December 16th of 2017. This exhibit aims to share the research and production that has continued at the new site of Pilotenkueche. It is our goal to trigger and to develop a dialogue, to propel a participative mandate between enthusiasts & artists.

On the second day of the Open Studios, we would like to invite the public to further participate in an open discussion about the process of our current residents.

“Work in Dialogue” Talks:  4.11.17, 14:00h

The PILOTENKUECHE art program is an independent project, open to artists of all nationalities. The common goal of the final group exhibition leads to intensive dialogue about individual ideas and practices, and binds each artist temporarily into a group, leading to a long term network that exists even after the residency is over.

Visiting: East and Central Leipzig // 26.10.17

Last week, we were led through a history and art related tour in the east of Leipzig. At our first stop at  “Pögehaus e.V.” Jan Keilhauer gave us an introduction to the aims of collective community endeavors in the east, in times of rapid gentrification. During our walking tour we stopped to speak at the old site of PILOTENKUECHE, as well as at an underground gallery Bistro 21. Our east-side tour ended with an evening visit to an opening at the MdbK.

We also had the chance to speak to a class of pupils, accompanied by the Leipzig based painter Marlet Heckhoff. Thank you for visiting us!
