Re-View: “151 sec” // 11.05.18

Here are some impressions of last week’s preview show in the east of Leipzig. Some of our pilots participated in Pilotenkueche’s first collaborative exhibition at K56 , a versatile exhibition space run by artists Daniel Wilmers and Helga Hagen. The exhibition featured paintings, photography, and installation as well as a sound performance. For those unable to attend, K56 will be open select dates this week as well as for the finissage on 26.05.18.

Thank you to everyone who attended and participated, and to Daniel and Helga for making this collaboration possible!

Artist Spotlight: High Priest

For the third instalment of our “artist spotlight” series, we present High Priest, a sound collective from Los Angeles already making waves here in Leipzig and beyond. Formed by Henry Bell and Benjamin Leal, the duo rejects the traditional idea of an audience, performing not for humans but for the objects which are simultaneously their subjects and their spectators.

Here at Pilotenkueche, Benjamin and Henry are using their time to further explore the relationship between objects and sound, creating a series of “tone poems”, short pieces which use sound to describe and interact with their subjects. Through this series, High Priest intends to formulate a lexicon of sound-object interaction which can be systematically applied to any subject, a blueprint for a language which can be used to produce new tone poems or reproduce previous ones. On April 27th, High Priest performed at Hühnermanhattan Klub in Halle. We look forward to seeing what they come up with next!

Re-View: “Cabin Pressure” // 09.05.2018

On Wednesday, some of our pilots had a joint exhibition at an experimental art space in Lindenau. We had a wonderful time in the collaboratively curated room, featuring paintings, photography, sound installation and sculpture.

We would like to thank the organizer, curator and artist Marcel Noack of Ping-Pong for his collaborative spirit!

Visiting: intershop interdisciplinaire, Helge Hommes and Saxana N. Schötschel // 26.04.18

Last week we visited two spaces, intershop interdisciplinaire in the Spinnerei and the studio of Saxana N. Schötschel and Helge Hommes. At textile artist Louise Walleneit’s  intershop interdisciplinaire, we saw the work of Anita Kriebel and Carsten Busse, and had the chance to discuss the exhibition with Carsten himself. The exhibition consists of conceptual multimedia installations which combine various techniques and forms of expression. We spoke to Carsten about his constructivist influences, references to Beuys, and desire to let his art speak for itself rather than explaining it. Thank you Carsten for having us!

Next we visited the studio of Helge Hommes and Saxana N. Schötschel, where we learned about not only the paintings and installation pieces, but also the political and personal motivations behind each artist’s work. We discussed the ways that Helge and Saxana’s work has evolved since meeting each other, and the pressure that comes along with the “trap” of recognition. Thank you for your time Helge and Saxana, and for giving us a copy of Helge’s manifesto!

Artist Spotlight: Silvina Rodriguez

In this weekly series, we present positions currently working in our studio. Today, we introduce you to Silvina Rodriguez who does painting and textile art.

Just over two weeks into Pilotenkueche’s 35th round, and already Silvina Rodriguez is hard at work. Incorporating materials such as posters, advertisements, and pieces of trash found around the city, Silvina is creating a portrait of Leipzig, its flora and fauna. Her urban “flora and fauna” series explores cities from the ground up, piecing together what gives a city its unique character by examining the creatures who inhabit it and the objects they leave behind. Leipzig is the second city in her series, after Curibita in Brazil. We spoke to Silvina about her recent foray into the world of ceramics, and the challenges that come along with a medium which requires so much patience. Parallel to her flora and fauna series, Silvina is also considering the female cycle through the lense of both societal and personal anxiety around menstruation.
