Visiting: Spinnerei Galleries & Nicolás Dupont

Last week we introduced our artist to the “Spinnerei” complex and its contemporary galleries, including Gallerie Kleindienst, EIGEN + Art, and REITER. We also had a chance to speak to the artist Nicolás Dupont about his practice and current projects. We also met his studio-mates who were kind enough to give us impromptu talks about their work. Thank you Nicolás for receiving us at your atelier!

Guest visit: HTWK class // 26.04.17

This week we had a class visit from the Leipzig University of Applied Sciences. Coming from a science background, this group of students heightened our self-awareness and gave us the chance to clarify the way we speak of art. To those who are unfamiliar with an art themed discourse, conceptual practices may seem inaccessible, but the conversation we had showed that with enough curiosity, there are many common themes to explore. We discussed the possibilities of art as field work, and as an active form of anthropology, the authorship of the artist, the process of forming a visual language, and the necessity of text or information when making an analysis of contemporary art work. We thank the class and the efforts of Professor Friedriche Figge for visiting us!

Final Exhibition // ‘Full Stop’ 31st round / 20 – 27.05.17

The final show of the recent residents from Brazil, Belgium, Greece, Canada, Sweden, Northern Ireland, USA, UK, Russia, Malaysia, China, and South Korea will present the culminating work after three months of PILOTENKUECHE!

This group is particularly special to us as the first group of artists that has vitalized the new site of Pilotenkueche. Their work offers a very special focus on painting, research based work, installation and photography, presenting a diversity of expression around the topics of identity, data aggregation, & nature with a myriad of technical & activistic approaches. During the finale there will be three performances, live music, and a chance to discuss the final work with our international residents. In addition we are pleased to include three guest artists from Leipzig: Hannes Uhlenhaut, Marie Lynn Ravens, and hansen_windisch. With an ethos of inclusion, we present a range of narratives to explore the dialogue of the broader context in contemporary art. The show will take place at the new space of PILOTENKUECHE, where all are welcome to attend the celebration of the tenth anniversary of the project.

BBQ: Hallo Nachbarn!

This week we hosted a gathering to get to know the neighbors. We had a chance to talk about future plans and discuss ideas with artists based in the west side, and met some new friends from the studios just down the street. When it began to hail, our grilling party moved upstairs to the studios, turning this event into a miniature tour. We had a lovely time, thank you to all who attended, and see you next time!

PILOTENKUECHE is regularly creating events with the residents to introduce them to the local art scene and – moreover – to create an exchange between our international guests and the practitioners based in Leipzig.

Visiting: Andrea Garcia Vasquez

This week we had the chance to discover the process of tapestry art during our visit to the studio of Andrea Garcia Vasquez, formerly a resident at our own studios. After deciding to stay in Leipzig, Andrea enrolled as a media student at the HGB. This studio visit provoked conversations around topics of migration, the subject of home, and the relations between nature and humanity. We also discussed the implications inherent to ephemeral art in her new series. Thank you Andrea!

We are glad to introduce former and current residents to one another, and build opportunities for generations of pilots to build networks together. Visiting: Lucino Veo & Natalia Kalicki

Last Thursday we visited the neighboring studios of Franz-Flemming Str. 15, to visit the ateliers of Lucino Veo and our own Natalia Kalicki. The two previously studied at Concordia University, in Montreal, Canada, and after adventures in Finland and Italy, are currently Leipzig based.

Veo has cultivated a fascination for old master painting techniques. His intensive process reflects a careful investigation of bygone methodologies, and the relation of that methodology to sometimes whimsical, often fantastical, yet distinctly lucid themes. Kalicki, while also focused on oil painting, approaches the material with Dionysian zeal, and is absorbed by concepts of obsession, consummation and self-consumption, electing a jolly grotesqueness to best epitomize the human kingdom.

Visiting: Museum der Bildenden Künste

This week we visited the fine art museum in Leipzig, and had the chance to view the permanent collections as well as the newer Klinger and Lüpertz pieces, among others. Invigorated by a lively afternoon, we finished the day by brainstorming about our upcoming shows.

Visiting: Fernando Davis & Christiane Bruhns

Last week we visited the studio of the passionate and talented artist Chrisitiane Bruhns. She talked with us about the creative and the compositional process of her abstract paintings. Her new studiomate Fernando Davis who was a pilot of the 29th round presented his works too.

After that we turned back to our studio and celebrated christmas. Many thanks Christiane and all the best Fernando!
