Work in progress: Setup of the Final Exhibition // 21.09.18

After two and a half months of the program, the artists are preparing for the final exhibition in the studio rooms of Pilotenkueche. With the support of the curator, positions are negotiated, new combinations of artworks are discovered, and even walls find new homes as the studio undergoes a metamorphosis in the days leading up to the opening on Friday, which will include work from each of our international residents and local participants, as well as performances from guest artists.

Re-View: Consultation // 11.09.18

Curator Vanessa Souli selects works for “CORPORAL TEMPERATURE”, round 36 final show. Curating a show is much more than just hanging some pictures. A bad install can ruin the whole thing. Works should engage and empower each other. In order to get a complete picture of the deeper meaning behind each of the artists’ works, Vanessa Souli speaks with each artist individually.  She has also been here throughout the entire round and has been able to witness  how working in a foreign environment with new people has influenced both the work and the artists, themselves.

The Final Exhibition of our residents from the US, Japan, Argentina, UK, Germany, Austria, China, and Taiwan, will present ongoing work after three months spent at the residency. This round of artists had a particular focus on painting, textile art, installation, sculpture, and performance, and one sound artist who also will contribute their work to the program of the Final Show.

The PILOTENKUECHE art program is an independent project, open to artists of all nationalities. The common goal of the final group exhibition leads to intensive dialogue about individual ideas and practices, and binds each artist temporarily into a group, leading to a long term network that exists even after the residency is over.

Re-View: “Architecture of Experience” // 06.05.18

On Thursday, some of our pilots had a joint exhibition at an experimental art space in Lindenau. We had a wonderful time in the show space, featuring paintings, installation and illustration from three of our residents.

We would like to thank the gallery owner Marcel Noack of Ping-Pong for his collaborative spirit!

Exhibition Setup PING PONG // Opening 06.09.18

After two months of the program, some of our residents are preparing the second exhibition of the current round. Supported by the curator Vanessa Souli, they are in the phase of completing their individual projects and setting up “Architecture of Experience” in the art space PING PONG.

‘Architecture of Experience’ is the second show of a selected number of artists, current residents of the 36th round of Pilotenküche Art Program. How does architecture influence our experiences and emotions and how does space facilitate or hinder our lives as human beings and as artists? The exhibition showcases curated works which comment upon the relationship between spatial structures and emotional experiences, either literally or metaphorically.

Artist Talks: “Space Chorus” // 30.08.18

Here are a few impressions of this weeks artist talks at the Alte Handelsschule exhibition Space Chorus with the latest residents from the UK, Israel, Japan, China, Australia, Argentina and the US. We gained an insight on the current approaches at our studios, highlighting diverse methods of negotiation between space, object, and interpretation. This round has an interest in reinterpreting tradition, pinching social norms, and using interdisciplinary methods in ways that are both playful and sincere.

For those who were unable to attend, feel free to join us at the Finissage on August 31st at 19:00h!

We are excited to show you what we have been working on this round, and hope to see you there!

Artist Spotlight: Undine Bandelin

In this series, we present artists currently working in our studio. Today, we introduce you to Undine Bandelin.

We visited our current Local Participant Undine in her studio close to Pilotenkueche. Born in Jena, Undine studied painting in Halle and lives in Leipzig since 2013. Currently, she collaborates with galleries in Leipzig and Erfurt. Her subject is mainly the human figure, its ways of expression via posture, movement, and physique, but her motifs digress into portraits, landscapes, and animal studies as well. Interpersonal communication plays an equally important role as much as individual traits.

Often, she begins with a screen print, transforming a photography into a template which is then modified. This requires high anatomy skills and coenesthesia, intuitive knowledge she often supports by practicing, sketching, and working over the image several times, adding colorful layers that transform the original starting point. The result is settled somewhere between dream and reality, story and status quo, a very unique take on surrealism and expressionism.

Artist Spotlight: Lily Cummins

In this series, we present artists currently working in our studio. Today, we introduce you to Lily Cummins.

Australian artist Lily Cummins works with a combination of abstract and recognisable forms, questioning the idea of representation and creating a dream-like patchwork of memory.

Since coming to Pilotenkueche her way of working has changed. Away from her previously muted palette she is now experimenting with striking combinations of sickly yellows, greens and pinks; colour that reject the obvious harmony within art but still work in their own approach. Her work seems to have an ambiguous narrative, conceived through repeated forms and structures. The text, characters and settings are all aspects which the viewer can relate to, but simultaneously struggles to make sense of; as though trying to recall a memory.

All photos by Pilotenkueche

Similar to how memories are erased or distorted, her work explores a similar process. Figures are drawn and then redrawn, text written only to be crossed out and painted over leaving it barely legible to the viewer. “When you look back on a memory it’s not always clear,” she mentions, “I have a cat at home, so currently the cat is a strong image,” where as human figures in her work can appear anonymous, perhaps something more distant.

As well as creating work for the final show, Cummins has been selected (along with two other residents) to exhibit in our smaller group exhibition at Ping Pong – Architecture of Experience. For this, she is hoping to continue with her smaller works to create an accumulative install, presenting a new body that will stand out against her previous larger scale work.
