Artist Spotlight: Silvina Rodriquez

In this weekly series, we present positions currently working in our studio. Today, we introduce you to Silvina Rodriquez who does painting and textile art.

Just over two weeks into Pilotenkueche’s 35th round, and already Silvina Rodriquez is hard at work. Incorporating materials such as posters, advertisements, and pieces of trash found around the city, Silvina is creating a portrait of Leipzig, its flora and fauna. Her urban “flora and fauna” series explores cities from the ground up, piecing together what gives a city its unique character by examining the creatures who inhabit it and the objects they leave behind. Leipzig is the second city in her series, after Curibita in Brazil. We spoke to Silvina about her recent foray into the world of ceramics, and the challenges that come along with a medium which requires so much patience. Parallel to her flora and fauna series, Silvina is also considering the female cycle through the lense of both societal and personal anxiety around menstruation.

Activities: MDR and Mashup V

During the first week of the 35th round, we had an interview with MDR for their documentary about Franz-Fleming-Straße’s burgeoning art scene. The documentary focuses on the new ateliers and galleries in Leutzsch, including projects such as Molina Ghosh’s Mashup, Pilotenkueche, ff15, and interviews with artists.

We attended the opening for Mashup V, the fifth show in Leipzig-based artist and curator Molina Ghosh‘s “Mashup” series. Mashup is an ongoing series of group exhibitions curated by Molina, featuring unknown “no-name” artists alongside known “name” artists. The current show is located in the basement of our studio building and will be open until May 19. We hope to further extend the collaboration in the future!

Activities: Artist Talk and BBQ

This week we came together for our first artist talk of the 35th round, where we got to see some of each artist’s previous work and hear about their methods, processes, and what they are hoping to accomplish during the program. This opened new avenues for dialogue and collaboration, and gave the artists a chance to reflect on their own work as well as others’, discovering common threads, interfaces, and approaches through group discourse. This is a taste of the collaboration and exchange that will be occurring in our studio during the next months, leading to our upcoming shows and final group exhibition. We also had a barbecue and got to know each other in a more casual setting. We are looking forward to seeing what this group comes up with!
