Visiting: Laura Eckert // 08.03.18

Last week, PILOTENKUECHE visited the Spinnerei in Leipzig. Laura Eckert welcomed us at her studio, where we had the chance to take a closer look at her sculptures. We discussed her method of using recyclable material, the intersection of medium and message, her aesthetic choices, and discussed her position as an artist. Thank you Laura for having us.

Expansions: Magdalena Cichon joins PILOTENKUECHE

We’d like to introduce Magdalena Cichon as the new Program Coordinator. She studied Painting and Textile Art at Burg Giebichenstein Halle until 2014, cooperating with galleries since 2011. Since 2015, she has been writing her Ph.D. thesis at Bauhaus University Weimar about painting as a means of research and epistemology. From April 2018, Magdalena will continue Natalia Kalicki’s work at Pilotenkueche.

As a painter, Magdalena mostly works with acrylic on canvas, experimenting with coincidence and oscillating between display and abstraction. The human body, its means of expression via its diverse ranges of shape and posture, is her main topic.

Check out her website here.

We are excited that Magdalena is going to join the team of Pilotenkueche where she will coordinate activities, set up exhibitions and care for PR-related tasks.

Re-View: Consultations // 26.02-28.03.18

Consultations, curation talks and follow-ups are an important part of our program. In the last week our in -house emerging curator, Maria Aria, discussed ongoing processes with individual residents of the 34th round, in preparation for the final exhibition “Flugbahn” held on March 24th at Pilotenkueche.  All are welcome to attend!

Visiting: Anja Heymann and Christian Brown in Connewitz // 01.02.18

Last week, PILOTENKUECHE visited Connewitz in Leipzig.  Anja Heymann, our local participant this round, welcomed us at her studio, where we had the chance to take a closer look at her work, collections, and methodology. We continued to the studio of Christian Brown, also a former pilot who relocated to Leipzig, to take a look at his drawing and printing practice. We ended the trip with a visit to Werk 2 Kulturfabrik, where we had the chance to speak about the various open studio programs, ranging from etching to book binding. We thank the artists for hosting us!

Re-View: “Durchdashaus” // 22-25.02.18

Last week, some of our pilots had a joint exhibition at an experimental art space in Lindenau. We had a wonderful time in the collaboratively curated room, featuring paintings, text based work, photography and sculpture.

We would like to thank the organizer, curator and artist Marcel Noack of Ping-Pong for his collaborative spirit!

Final Exhibition // “FLUGBAHN” of the 34th round / 24.03.18

The final show of our most recent participants from the US, Canada, Israel, Denmark, Chile, Turkey, Ireland, Germany, Italy, Brazil, and Ireland, bring a focus on painting, sculpture, textiles and photography. The group will present the work following three months spent at the program. Here are impressions of their most recent preview exhibitions, realized and displayed at the spaces of our partner “Alte Handelsschule” and “Ping Pong“:

“FLUGBAHN”‘ is a flight path. In the 34th round at PILOTENKUECHE, we discover new trajectories, and examine common intersections. A single space contains paper and sound, dyed fabric and video footage, modified attire and paintings. In one moment individual routes are perceived, in another, the collective enterprise of sharing one Flugbahn.

We are also pleased to incorporate the work of our local participants, Anja Heymann and René Schäffer, as well as our guest artists featured during the program of the opening night at our studios. All are welcome to board the final flight of the 34th round.

Visiting: Kalicki & Veo // 15.02.18

Last week the residents were invited to the ateliers of our team, at their studios in FF15, a building neighboring Pilotenkueche’s very own headquarters. Lucino Veo, who’s practice is rooted in technique and tradition presented a selection of his work and shared his thoughts on art, craft and the art market. Natalia Kalicki for her part, presented her raw, messy and evocative visual commentary on consumerism, consumption and the absurdity of modern lifeFollowing the visit, we visited our local S1 Vinyl & Kaffee where Kalicki’s work is currently on view.
